Purpose Global Village visits Ganvié.

From the Water City to the West Coast

What a season! Over the past few months, our team has been on the road across the United States — exhibiting, meeting makers and collectors, and sharing the story behind every piece in our new inventory from Benin and other African countries. In between, we made the journey that has shaped everything we are doing next: a visit to Ganvié, the extraordinary stilt village on Lake Nokoué in southern Benin, West Africa. We came home with new partnerships, new inventory, and a deeper commitment to the artisans who make this work possible.

Ganvié: A Village Built on Survival

Ganvié sits in the middle of Lake Nokoué, roughly 20–25 kilometers north of Cotonou, Benin’s largest city — a city of bamboo and teak houses on stilts, with no streets, only water (Journeys by Design).

The Tofinu people founded it in the 16th–17th centuries, fleeing to the lake to escape Fon warriors of the Dahomey kingdom who captured people to sell to European and Portuguese enslavers (Wikipedia). Because the Fon held religious beliefs that kept them from fighting on water, the lake became a sanctuary — and the stilt houses became a home (Wendy’s Gone Walkabout).

The name says it all: Ganvié means “we survived” in the local language (Far Out Magazine). When French colonizers later tried to dismantle the village as a symbol of resistance, the villagers negotiated and preserved their way of life (Journeys by Design).

Four centuries later, it is still standing. Still thriving. Still on the water.

By the Numbers

LocationLake Nokoué, southern Benin, ~20–25 km north of Cotonou (Visit Benin Republic)
PopulationEstimated 20,000–40,000 residents, commonly cited around 30,000 (Visit Benin Republic)
HomesApproximately 3,000 stilt houses (Field Study of the World)
Founded16th–17th century by the Tofinu people (Wikipedia)
DistinctionLargest lake village in Africa, known as the “Venice of Africa” (Field Study of the World)
LivelihoodsFishing, trade, agriculture, crafts, and tourism (Journeys by Design)
Community lifeFloating markets, schools on stilts, a hospital, a post office (Field Study of the World)

Daily life is organized entirely around water — pirogues are the transportation, and traditional acadja fishing and lake trade anchor the economy (Visit Ganvié, Bons Voyages).

New Partnerships, Real Impact

Agnes shop owner Ganvie Village

During our visit, we:

  • Formed new partnerships with artisan cooperatives, weavers, carvers, textile makers, and traders in and around Ganvié.
  • Supported many artisans directly through fair purchases for our new inventory — payments that go straight into household income, not middlemen.
  • Built relationships with community leaders to plan longer-term, repeatable business rather than one-time buying trips.

Why Supporting Artisans and Villagers Matters

For generations, fishing sustained Ganvié. But lake fish stocks are under pressure, and many families have shifted toward trade, crafts, and tourism to make ends meet (Anadolu Agency). Research on tourism in Ganvié also documents real strain on the community — aging housing along the tourist route, limited infrastructure, and sanitation challenges (Mémoire Online).

That is exactly why buying directly from artisans matters. Inclusive tourism and trade — the kind that brings local people into the supply chain as partners, not spectators — is what turns visitor interest into household stability (OpenEdition).

Every piece we carry represents:

  • Income that stays in the community — school fees, medical care, boat repairs, materials for the next order.
  • Craft traditions preserved — techniques passed down for centuries have a market and a future.
  • Dignity and self-determination — Ganvié’s story has always been about survival on its own terms. Our role is to buy fairly, pay promptly, and come back.

We’re Going Back

This was a beginning, not a one-off. Our plans for the coming year:

  • Return to Benin to visit our partners in Ganvié and expand our artisan network.
  • Grow the business relationship with larger, recurring orders so makers can plan and hire.
  • Deepen partnerships with cooperatives and local organizations on training, materials, and market access.
  • Bring more people with us — we are exploring group travel and cultural immersion experiences for supporters who want to see Ganvié for themselves.

“A Year of Purpose: 2025 Highlights from Africa to the U.S.”

Dear Friends and Supporters, It’s been quite a year! We realized it’s been since 2024 that we last shared a newsletter, and we apologize for our silence. Our work in 2025 has been abundant and deeply rewarding, and we’re excited to share the highlights with you. This year, our Purpose Global Village team reconnected with our partners in Sierra Leone and supported 40 girls in York and Tokeh Village. Through generous contributions, we provided school supplies, clothing, and other essential items to children and families in need. With the current economic challenges in Sierra Leone, many parents and guardians are unable to fund their children’s education, so our organization stepped in—covering full tuition for some and ensuring others received basic learning materials. Our dedicated team leader, Mr. Theophilus Torwah, continues to guide our Sierra Leone initiative with compassion and purpose. Having experienced loss and hardship himself as an orphan of the Sierra Leonean War, Theophilus understands the importance of education and opportunity. His commitment to helping children—especially young girls—is inspiring. In 2026, we look forward to expanding this effort to support boys as well.

Mr. Theophilus Torwah

Our travels this year also took us to Ghana and The Gambia, where we collaborated with local artisans to create one-of-a-kind African handmade products. These partnerships continue to celebrate craftsmanship, culture, and community. In the U.S., 2025 was a vibrant year of events and connections. We were delighted to participate in the Colorado Black Arts Festival (July 11–13) and the Winter Park Jazz Festival (July 19–20), where we showcased our handcrafted African goods. Both festivals gave us the chance to reconnect with old friends and meet many new supporters.

Tokeh Village

In September, we returned to the Monterey Jazz Festival—three unforgettable days (September 26–28) of music, culture, and community. Each year, Monterey feels like home, and we are always grateful for the continuous support. Most recently, on October 11–12, Purpose Global Village joined the Thrive Women’s Conference in Rochester, MN, for the first time. We were touched by the warm welcome and inspired by the women who visited our booth and shared their stories.

As 2025 draws to a close, we look forward to our upcoming events in November and December and to finishing the year with gratitude and purpose. Thank you for walking this journey with us, for believing in our mission, and for helping us make an impact across communities in Africa and beyond. With appreciation,

We believe every child deserves the chance to shine, and with your help, we can make that dream a reality.

Stay tuned for exciting updates throughout the year as we embark on new journeys to nurture, empower, and uplift children in need. Together, we can make a difference, one smile at a time. One village at a time!”

Happy New Year!

Our Relationships

Welcome to 2023! We want to thank everyone for the support and love they provided our organization last year. Purpose Global Village was able to help meet the needs of children in two countries. One of the countries was Gambia, located in west Africa, and Ghana was the second. We established a sister foundation in Gambia to increase our ability to serve and provide for women and children. We are excited about the new relationships created and established in Gambia and look forward to serving families.

The month of June was a busy and productive month for PGV!

This year has come and almost gone, but we are delighted to connect with you and share our work this year finally.  With Levi Thomas, we formed new relationships and connections in the Gambia, west Africa. Levi Thomas is a non-profit organization that helps children in the Gambia. We thank our generous donor, Dr. Colette Boston. Dr. Boston donated several backpacks filled with school supplies. We were also able to provide clothing to children in addition to school supplies and laptops donated by HP Nelson.

In Ghana, many students were provided shoes at Nyariga primary school throughout the 2021 and 2022 school years. We met last year with a delegation of 14 teachers at the Nyariga Primary School to determine the needs of the children.  Teachers at Nyariga School and PGV decided that many children need basic necessities like shoes, clothing, and uniforms to attend school. The school requested technology, texts books, whiteboards, and essential items for student success.

Our Relationships

We want to thank our loyal customers, friends, family, and new family members for making this year’s festival a huge success! The 64th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival took place at the Monterey Fairgrounds on September 23-25.  It was an exciting and star-filled line-up of incredible jazz artists that included George Benson, Pat Metheny, Ledisi, Herbie Hancock, and Candace Springs, to name a few. The festival resumed this year after a year off because of the pandemic, and even though the festival attendance was significantly reduced because of COVID Restrictions the festival was a well attended sold-out event!

This was our first appearance as a non-profit, however, this was our 11th year in attendance as a business entity.

Making Plans to Return To The African Continent!

Our Relationships

This year has been full of twists and unexpected turns. However, we have managed to support women and children in 3 countries on the Continent of Africa. Our work started in Ghana at the beginning of the year and expanded to Rwanda and Botswana. We are thankful that we were able to expand support for more children and women through programs that support and promote sustainable living. PGV supplied women in Botswana with sewing machines and much-needed toiletries during the pandemic.

Many people here in the US and abroad have been widely affected by the worldwide Corona Virus Pandemic.  The economic shutdown of businesses and the inability to work have been a major contributor to the widespread need among several communities.

June Concert & Madagascar Trip Postponed!

Our trip to Madagascar, Rwanda and Ghana have been postponed until Madagascar, Rwanda, and Ghana open their borders. Our initial plans were to travel on June 8, 2020 but the United States restricted travel. Then we rescheduled to July 5, 2020 but decided to cancel because the International Airport Transportation Association (IATA) displayed that Ghana, Madagascar, and Rwanda’s airports were closed to foreign travelers.

For the past 4 years we have promoted our Black Music Month Concert and held it in the month of June however; this year amid the CoronaVirus Pandemic we were forced to postpone this event.
